Where Beauty Lives

Sometimes we think we know what beauty is and where we can find it.  In my case I will believe that something beautiful is something pleasant to look at, that is fresh, smells good, maybe a beautiful melody or voice, something colorful, balanced and even alive.

A great example of something beautiful to me, can be a room with fresh flowers, art and furniture perfectly balanced, good natural light coming through the windows and the sound of silence or a nice favorite song.

But my 3 year old daughter just taught me the whole opposite. And I feel grateful to have in my life somebody like her that can impress me everyday with a nice gesture of kindness and untouched innocence.

Here is the story.  My daughter and I went for a walk outside in our street, she was riding her tricycle, it was the day right after halloween so the street had some dirty candy wrappers. So we kept on going, on our way back she suddenly stopped and said "Look Mommy some flowers!!"  And I said,  "No leave them they are dead and cars already ran over them."  And she looked at me and said "No Mommy they are pretty, see the flowers!!"
And that was exactly when I knew I had to stop with my "adult knowledge" and negativism.  And I said to her, "You are right!! They are pretty and I can see the flowers, let's take them home and put them in a vase."

So we did, and they were on our dining table for a few days and I took a picture of them, so I will always remember that beauty is not where I think it is.  That it lives in our heart and mind and that there's so much to learn from my little girl.

Donde vive la Belleza

A veces creemos saber que es la belleza y en donde la podemos encontrar.  En mi caso yo creería que algo bello es algo agradable a la vista, que es fresco, huele bien, tal vez una hermosa melodía o voz, algo lleno de color, con balance e inclusive con vida.

Un gran ejemplo de algo bello para mi, puede ser una habitación con flores frescas, arte y muebles en perfecto balance, buena luz natural que entre por las ventanas y el sonido del silencio o de una agradable canción favorita.

Pero mi pequeña de tres años me acaba de enseñar todo lo opuesto.  Y me siento agradecida de tener en mi vida a alguien como ella que me pueda impresionar cada día con un gran gesto de amabilidad y de una inocencia que no ha sido tocada.

Aquí esta la historia:  Mi hija y yo fuimos a caminar por la calle.  Ella andaba en su triciclo, era el día después de Halloween así que la calle estaba llena de envolturas sucias de dulces.  Así que seguimos, y ya de regreso de pronto ella se detuvo y me dice "Mira Mami unas flores!!"  Y le dije, "No déjalas ya están muertas y ya muchos carros pasaron sobre ellas."  Y me miró y me dijo "No Mami están bonitas, ves las flores!!"

Y ese fue el momento en que supe que tenía que parar con mi "conocimiento de adulto" y negativismo. Y le dije  "Tienes razón!! Están muy bonitas y si veo las flores, vamos a llevarnos las flores a la casa y ponerlas en un florero".

Y así lo hicimos, estuvieron en nuestra mesa por unos días y les tomé una foto, para poder recordar siempre que la belleza no está donde yo pienso que está.  Que vive en nuestros corazones y mente que hay mucho por aprender de mi niña pequeña.

A small display that makes me smile

As I was saying I have the luck of having art pieces from different artists, but this very simple display of plates and metal butterflies, makes me happy as well.

We bought the plates at two different stores and the butterflies were my Mother's, so I grew up looking at them.

Como comentaba antes, tengo la suerte de tener obras de arte de diferentes artistas, pero este sencillo juego de platos de mariposas de metal, me hacen muy feliz también.

Los platos los compramos en dos tiendas diferentes y las mariposas eran de mi Mamá, así que crecí viéndolas siempre.

A Wedding Gift

This pastel was made by my good friend Alejandra Lozano back in 2004.  She gave it to us as a wedding present.  Her picture has been on different walls in our house, but about a year ago I decided to just put it on one of our kitchen counters so I can enjoy it everyday when I make my coffee or tea.

I met Alejandra or "Ale", that's really how I called her, when we were in high school so it's been a long time and we experienced a lot of fun things together and some important events in our life.

Este cuadro hecho con pasteles, fue hecho por mi buena amiga Alejandra Lozano en el 2004.  Fue el regalo de boda que nos dio.  Su cuadro ha estado en diferentes paredes de nuestra casa, pero hace un año decidí ponerlo en unos de nuestros gabinetes de la cocina para así poder disfrutarlo cada día que me preparo mi café o te.

Conocí a Alejandra o "Ale", como en realidad le llamo, cuando estábamos en preparatoria, así que ha pasado mucho tiempo y hemos vivido muchas cosas divertidas, así como eventos importantes en nuestras vidas.

This wall is part of our family room and recently I hung these three pieces of art on it. The drawing in the center is made by my brother Roberto Tostado as well as the etching on the right.

The third art piece is a small painting that my in-laws gave us.  It was painted by Italian artist Carlo Piagentini.  We love the colors in this painting.

Esta pared es parte de nuestra sala de televisión y área de juegos de nuestra hija.  Recientemente colgué tres cuadros.
El dibujo en el centro fue hecho por mi hermano Roberto Tostado así como el grabado que esta a la derecha.
La tercer pieza es un cuadro que mis suegros nos regalaron.  Hecho por el artista Italiano Carlo Piagentini.  Nos encantan los colores en este cuadro.

Me siento honrada de poder tener obras de arte hechas por otros artistas y que mis hijas crezcan rodeadas de arte.

My brother and his girlfriend's apartment

This is just simply the kind of place where I feel at home.  I love everything about it... starting with the awesome art that my brother has made.  As you might know by now I am true fan of what my brother does as well as my sister's crafts.  But going back to his apartment, there's just a vibe that I can not have enough of.  It might be the beautiful light coming through the windows and reflecting on the old shiny wood floors, or the shelves stacked with plants and interesting books.

And where music is playing all the time, it can be from Sinatra, to Beatles, Al Green, Bob Dylan, Flamenco guitar all the way to Mexican songs from Antonio Aguilar just to mention a few examples of the variety that you will hear at their place.

The dining room is a beautiful place where meals are accompanied by the delicious, spicy, Mexican salsas that Lili makes... you just want more food because you want to keep eating her salsa.

His paintings don't need much explanation.  They speak for themselves- full of color and reflecting great knowledge of the human figure.

Brushes and the familiar smell of oil paint and thinner, along with pencils and sketch notebooks, are some of the things you'll find here, too.

El departamento de mi Hermano y de su Novia.

Éste lugar es simplemente el tipo de lugar en el que me siento en casa.  Todo me gusta de aquí... empezando por los increíbles cuadros que mi hermano ha pintado.  Como ya sabrán soy una verdadera fanática de lo que hace mi hermano así como también de las manualidades que mi hermana elabora.

Pero volviendo al departamento de mi hermano y de Lili hay simplemente una vibra la cual me tiene encantada.  Puede ser la luz que entra por las ventanas y se refleja en el viejo y brilloso piso de duela, o los libreros repletos de plantas y libros interesantes.

Y donde musica suena todo el tiempo,  puede ser desde Sinatra, a los Beatles, Al Green, Bob Dylan, guitarra Flamenca, hasta canciones Mexicanas de Antonio Aguilar solo por mencionar algunos ejemplos de la variedad de los que escucharas en su departamento.

El comedor es un lugar especial y acogedor, en donde las comidas son acompañadas de las deliciosas y picantes, salsas Mexicanas que Lili prepara... simplemente quieres mas comida para poder seguir comiendo su salsa.

Sus cuadros no necesitan mucha explicación.  Hablan por si mismos- llenos de color y reflejando el gran conocimiento sobre la figura humana.

Pinceles y el olor familiar de óleo y aguarrás, junto con lápices y libretas de bocetos, son algunas de las cosas que también encontrarás aquí.

My Sister-in-law Place

Today I'm sharing with you a beautiful and airy place full on sunlight and where living simple is exactly what you need when you are a very active person.  She is a very happy person who loves color.

It's an open space where you have the pleasure of enjoying a terrace and the fresh air that comes by opening the door.

So this is her living room where she has three of my paintings and I feel very honored that she gave a home to some of my paintings.

So here are the three paintings, one is the Birch Trees above her sofa and the other are two different kind of tulips that hang on the sides of her door leading to the terrace.





And near her front door she has a beautiful and practical table where you can put your purse and keys when you come in and above that is a painting I made of her dog Sammy that she once had.

And lastly I want to show you her relaxing terrace off her living room.

I hope you enjoyed the visit to my wonderful sister-in-law's place.

Hoy quiero compartir con ustedes un hermoso lugar lleno de luz y en donde vivir de forma simple es exactamente lo que necesitas cuando eres una persona activa.  Ella es una persona muy alegre que le encanta vivir rodeada de color. 

Es un espacio abierto en donde tienes el placer de disfrutar de un balcón y del aire fresco que entra al abrir la puerta.

Así que ésta es su sala en donde tiene tres de mis cuadros y yo me siento muy halagada de que esos cuadros estén en su hogar.

Y aquí están los tres cuadros, el que está arriba de su sillón lo titulé Birch Trees (Abedules) y los otros dos cuadros que están a los lados de la puerta que da a su balcón son dos tipos diferentes de Tulipanes.

Y cerca de su puerta de entrada tiene una mesa muy bonita la cual es muy práctica en donde puedes poner tu bolsa o llaves al entrar y sobre esa mesa esta el cuadro que le hice de su perro Sammy que tuvo hace tiempo.

Y por último quiero mostrarles su balcón el cual es bastante relajante y que esta junto a su sala.

Espero hayan disfrutado de la visita en donde vive mi maravillosa cuñada.

Paintings at a relative's home

I'm very glad to be able to show you how some of my paintings and a couple of my brother's small paintings look at a relative's home.

This first painting is hung in the foyer with a beautiful lamp and flowers sitting at a dry sink.

Estoy muy contenta de poder mostrarles como se ven algunos de mis cuadros y también un par de cuadros que pintó mi hermano, en la casa de unos familiares míos.

El primer cuadro titulado Un Ultimo Deseo, esta colgado en el recibidor con una lámpara muy bonita y flores que están sobre un mueble antiguo de madera,  que antes se usaba para los trastes en la cocina.

El siguiente cuadro titulado Perseverancia, esta en la sala y es hasta ahora el cuadro mas grande que he pintado.

Y el siguiente cuadro se conforma de tres bastidores chicos y se llama Flores Rojas en el Campo.

Mi hermano Roberto Tostado, hizo estos dos cuadros chicos para mis familiares a los cuales tituló Soñadores.

Y el último cuadro, desconozco el título o al artista, pero me gusta mucho y quería también mostrárselos.

Espero hayan disfrutado estas fotos así como yo disfruté de haberlas tomado y compartido con ustedes.

Paintings from our Bedroom (Part 2)

This next painting is my version of The Falls Of The Clyde - originally painted by British landscape artist William Turner.

While I was studying with my art teacher Gerardo Beuchot, I had the desire to paint something different and to use a spatula as a tool instead of a brush. So he recommended I take a look at one small book he had of painter William Turner and soon I knew I wanted to replicate this painting as part of my learning.

I love the colors in the painting, and that it almost looks like an abstract, but it is actually a landscape. William Turner had a sensibility for capturing how natural sunlight played with landscapes.

So here it is now hanging on my bedroom wall above a bookcase that I have pretty full of my little treasures.

El siguiente cuadro, es mi versión de Las Cataratas de Clyde - originalmente pintado por el paisajista Británico William Turner.

Mientras yo estudiaba con mi maestro de arte Gerardo Beuchot, tuve el deseo de hacer algo diferente en donde usara espátula en lugar de brocha.  Así que me recomendó que viera un librito que tenía del pintor William Turner y pronto supe que quería pintar este cuadro como parte de mi aprendizaje.

Me gustan mucho los colores de este cuadro, y que casi parece un abstracto pero es en realidad un paisaje.  

Y aquí esta ahora colgado arriba de un librero el cual lo tengo bastante lleno de mis pequeños tesoros.

Paintings from our Bedroom (Part1)

I'm excited to start showing you how I decorate with my paintings in our house. Here are some pictures:

This painting above our bed is an abstract that I painted back in 2005 and it has a beautiful frame.

We have a lot of blue in our bedroom so this painting of orange, brown and rusty colors is a nice contrast.  It can easily go in any part of your house.

My daughter's Godfather and his wife were nice enough to helped me upholster our headboard.

I cut this rose from our front yard and it changes colors as the petals spread open more and more every day.  Just beautiful.

Estoy muy emocionada porque hoy comparto con ustedes como decoro con algunos de mis cuadros en mi casa.  Estas son algunas fotos.

El cuadro que esta arriba de nuestra cama, es un abstracto que pinté en el 2005 y tiene un marco hermoso.  Tenemos muchos tonos azules en nuestra recámara así que éste cuadro con colores óxidos y cafés contrasta de muy buena forma.  Puede fácilmente ir en cualquier área de tu casa.

El padrino de nuestra hija y su esposa, fueron quienes amablemente, me ayudaron a forrar  con tela la cabecera de nuestra cama.

Corté esta rosa de nuestro jardín y sus pétalos van cambiando de color de forma que se va abriendo la flor día a día.  Simplemente hermosa.

We took a trip to Mexico City, where we visited some relatives.  And from my brother's apartment I got to see the beautiful view of the city at night with colorful lights reflecting on the buildings.

My brother, who is also an artist, see his blog here www.robertotostado.blogspot.com made this drawing and with my oils and brushes I turned it into night. 

En un viaje que hicimos a la ciudad de México en donde visitamos a algunos familiares y desde la ventana en el departamento de mi hermano pude ver la hermosa vista de la ciudad de noche con sus luces de colores que se reflejan en los edificios.

Mi hermano, quien es también un artista, puedes ver su blog aquí www.robertotostado.blogspot.com hizo este dibujo y yo con mis óleos y pinceles lo cambié a una escena nocturna.
